Whether you are a small business owner a big brand, you’ve likely wondered whether or not you should advertise your business on Facebook. The answer is that yes you absolutely should advertise your business on Facebook.

A Brief History of Facebook and Brands

Everyone knows that Facebook started out as a way to connect college and university students with one another. Once it was open to the public, it wasn’t long before savvy small business owners created their own profile page to engage with their audience without having to spend advertising dollars.

Facebook saw this as a great opportunity and introduced brand pages in 2010, an offshoot of their fan page concept. By now, major brands were using Facebook to expand their reach. It wasn’t long before Facebook realized that they could earn revenue through paid advertising.

What’s Good for Facebook Is Bad for Brands

Facebook has gone through many changes over the years and with each change, it becomes more difficult for business owners to reach their customers.

The social networking site is doing everything it can to push people to advertise their brand on Facebook. Over the past few years, the reach for brand pages has steadily declined, in some cases by nearly 50%.

With these new algorithms, you could have thousands of fans but have one post reach only 50 people. That is, of course, unless you shell out money for Facebook ads or promoted posts.

There Is Good News

The bad news is that if you want to reach your current fans, you have to pay for Facebook ads. The good news is that Facebook ads don’t cost a lot of money, especially if you have a local business.

For only $30 you can reach up to 6,000 people in one day. Many of those 6,000 people will share your promoted post earning you even more visibility.

Thanks to the latest algorithms, brand pages are essentially a free service in name only. If you want to see real ROI, then you actually have to invest some dollars into the service. But the fee is nominal when compared to traditional advertising methods.

We think advertising your business on Facebook is a good thing, but we want to hear from you. What do you think about these changes? If you’ve advertised on the social network, we’d love to hear what you thought about the results. Let us know in the comments.
